Enzian Expansion Update
Enzian to start expansion construction in summer 2016
From The Orlando Weekly, December 8, 2015
The Enzian Theater in Maitland plans to break ground on its expansion in summer 2016, not this year, as was originally speculated. The project, first revealed by The Orlando Weekly in April 2013, will add two screens, a new lobby and other amenities.
“We have a site plan submitted to the city [of Maitland] and hope to be through the process … by April. It took a tad longer than we expected,” says Elizabeth Mukherjee, Enzian’s executive vice president.
“Permitting should take three months or so, leaving us with a possible groundbreaking date around August. Then we hope to complete the project in under a year. Of, course we could always run into a wrinkle that could cause further delays, or we could get lucky, move quickly and be done by Florida Film Festival 2017, but right now, realistically, we’re looking at being completed summer after the 2017 [festival].”
One project that has already begun is the addition of two pedestrian crosswalks at the intersection of Orlando Avenue (17-92) and Magnolia Road, which would make it safer for Enzian patrons who park on the opposite side of Orlando Avenue from the theater. Improvements to the sidewalks and curb ramps are currently underway. The crosswalks themselves – one on the north side of the intersection closest to the Enzian and the other on the south side closest to Park Maitland School – are expected to be done by March, according to Chris Coleman of the Florida Department of Transportation.
