Orlando 48 Hour Film Project underway

Films to screen this weekend at Valencia

The Orlando 48 Hour Film Project will hold its screenings at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Performing Arts Center at Valencia Community College East Campus. Twenty-five films will be shown, and admission is free.

The 48 Hour Film Project is the world’s largest timed filmmaking competition, and Orlando is one of about 140 participating cities around the world. Filmmakers have just two days to write, shoot and edit a film between 4 and 7 minutes long. Though they can acquire equipment, assemble a cast and crew, and pick locations beforehand, all creative work must accomplished in the required time. And to prevent cheating, teams are assigned a prop, a line of dialogue and a character name and trait at the start of the 48-hour period. In addition, they are given a choice of two genres.

The awards ceremony and “Best-of Screening” will take place at 7 p.m. on August 4 at Touchstar Cinemas – Southchase 7, on South Orange Blossom Trail. Admission is $12.

Of the 25 films being shown, 18 are eligible for awards. The other seven were either not completed on time or didn’t properly incorporate all the required elements. The film selected best overall by a panel of judges will compete at next year’s Filmapalooza, the international competition for the 48 Hour Film Project. The top films from that event will screen at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.
