Thoughts on Oscar’s lack of diversity
Everyone is talking about the lack of diversity among this year’s Oscar nominees. I admit it’s a bit odd to have almost all-white nominees for the last two years, especially considering the outstanding quality of Beasts of No Nation. (And Bryan Cranston over Will Smith? Really?) But, honestly, I don’t care if the nominees are all white, all black, all Hispanic or all green. It’s about quality. And I refuse to believe that the eight or nine best films of the year are ALL English-language, ALL narrative fiction and ALL live action. When will the Academy include documentaries, foreign-language films and animated films among the best-film nominees? (Yes, the rules allow inclusion of all those.)
