Farewell to Paul Sorvino, David Warner
The recent deaths of character actors Paul Sorvino and David Warner conjure up very different memories for me. Warner was a fixture of my early movie-watching, with three of his memorable roles haunting my childhood: Henry Niles in Straw Dogs (1971), Jennings in The Omen (1976) and Evil Genuis in Time Bandits. His prolific career was crammed with other creepy characters — and some nice ones — but those three, for me, came to epitomize the British actor.
I got to know Sorvino later in my life, but his memory is even stronger in my mind thanks to my interview with him in 2014. Done in conjunction with his appearance at the Florida Film Festival, that conversation allowed me to experience both his powerful personality and grace. He certainly couldn’t have been kinder or more gracious to a relatively unknown film critic. Go here to listen to the interview.
